FIBA Americas - Puerto Rico headed to Spain 2014, three more to follow , sumber : www.fiba.com/pages/eng/fc/news/lateNews/p/newsid/68878/arti.html

CARACAS (FIBA Americas Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - Puerto Rico rallied from a 22-point deficit to edge out Venezuela 86-85 after overtime and become the first team at the 2013 FIBA Americas Championship to qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
In a thrilling encounter, Jose Juan Barea stunned the 13,000 full house at "El Poliedro" Coliseum with key three-pointers down the stretch and finished with 30 points, while Renaldo Balkman had 26 and 12 rebounds.
Donta Smith had 26 points and 13 rebounds and Luis Bethelmy added a dozen for Venezuela, who looked in control of the game in the first half.
They led 28-11 at the end of the first quarter, before stretching that advantage to 37-15 early in the second period and going into the break with a 43-28 cushion.
But Puerto Rico stormed back in the second half, outscoring the home side 31-21 in the third quarter and 22-15 in the final frame.
Barea hit a three-pointer to get his team within 77-73 with 1:46 left to play. He then made one of two free-throws and connected again from beyond the arc to close the gap to 79-77.
Balkman scored inside with 39 seconds remaining to tie the game at 79-79 and Smith missed a shot for the win in the final seconds of regulation.
In the overtime, Balkman once again scored in the paint to put Puerto Rico up 81-79, but Axiers Sucre scored at the other end to tie it up again.
Barea hit his seventh three-pointer of the night to put the Boricuas up 84-81 and Sucre answered immediately to cut it to 84-83.
Balkman scored with 51 seconds left for 86-83 and Smith made a pair of free-throws that got Venezuela within 86-85 with 27 seconds.
The overtime finished in a mad scramble with Smith turning the ball over as Barea got a steal but missed a free-throw before Smith's three-point attempt at the death was off.
With the win, Puerto Rico improved to 5-1 in the Second Round and have accumulated 11 points to top the standings.
They have booked their place in the tournament's Semi-Finals and as a result become the first team to punch its ticket for Spain 2014.
The remaining three Semi-Finalists - who will also qualify for the FIBA Basketball World Cup in Spain next year - will be determined on Sunday, the last day of the Second Round.
Mexico boosted their chances of joining Venezuela in the Semi-Finals and in Spain by winning their third game in a row, in a 100-89 defeat of Jamaica.
The Mexicans became the first team to score 100 points in the tournament as they improved to 4-2 and have won all three of their Second Round games.
Hector Hernandez was on fire as he scored a team-high 25 points while Orlando Mendez added 22.
The defeat for Jamaica saw them drop to 1-5 and ended their hopes of being in the running for the Semi-Finals.
They played without key player Samardo Samuels, who cut short his involvement with the national team after signing with Milan in the Italian League. His absence has given Jerome Jordan more playing opportunities and he made the most of them on Saturday night, scoring 22 points. Akeem Scott went for 18.
In a South American match-up, Argentina got their first win of the Second Round by beating Uruguay 89-63 to mathematically keep their hopes of reaching the Semi-Finals alive.
Luis Scola had 17 points and Adrian Boccia contributed 16 points off the bench.
For Uruguay, Nicolas Mazzarino scored 14 points as his team fell to 1-5 and was eliminated from the race to to Spain.
Argentina improved to 3-3 and can still advance but first must beat a strong Canada team on Sunday.

The Canadians lost for the second night in a row, falling to a Dominican Republic side that had gone all out the night before to beat Puerto Rico.
On Saturday, the Dominicans won 81-74 to improve to 4-2.
James Feldeine had 20 points and Francisco Garcia contributed with 17.
Andrew Nicholson had a game-high 29 points and Tristan Thompson had 14 points as Canada dropped to 3-3.
On Sunday, the remaining three Semi-Finalists and the last three qualifying places for Spain 2014 will be determined. The Dominican Republic, Mexico, Canada, Argentina and hosts Venezuela are still in the running.
Uruguay take on the Dominican Republic in the first game of the day, followed by a clash between Canada and Argentina. Puerto Rico face off against Mexico and the Second Round comes to a close with Jamaica going up against hosts Venezuela.

Knicks' Smith suspended five games for drug violation , sumber : www.nba.com/2013/news/09/06/knicks-smith-suspended.ap/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpts

NEW YORK (AP) -- New York Knicks guard J.R. Smith was suspended without pay for five regular-season games by the NBA on Friday for violating the anti-drug program.

Smith, coming off offseason surgery on his left knee, will sit out the first five games for which he is eligible and physically able to play. Smith had patella tendon surgery and arthroscopy that will keep him from joining the Knicks when they open training camp late this month.
"There is a collectively bargained process in place, established by the NBA and the players association, and until that process has played itself out, it would be inappropriate for the NBPA or J.R. to make further statements about the matter," Ron Klempner, the union's acting executive director, said in a statement. "We all look forward to a resolution in due course."
Smith won the Sixth Man of the Year award last season and helped shoot the Knicks into the playoffs before struggling in the postseason. He averaged 18.1 points during the regular season.

Parker leads France to second round of Eurobasket , sumber : www.nba.com/2013/news/09/08/eurobasket-day-5.ap/index.html?ls=iref:nbahpts

LJUBLJANA, Slovenia (AP) -- San Antonio Spurs star Tony Parker scored 28 points Sunday to lead France past Ukraine 77-71 and into the second round of the European basketball championship.
Finland advanced earlier in the day, eliminating Russia with an 86-83 win in double overtime. Russia was the bronze medalist at the London Olympics last year and at the Europeans two years ago. The top three teams from each group advance.
Finland trailed in regulation and the first overtime before pulling out the win. The Russians were without Minnesota Timberwolves forward Andrei Kirilenko and several other stars.
Italy stayed perfect after four games with an 81-72 victory over previously unbeaten Greece, with Chicago Bulls guard Marco Belinelli scoring 23 points. Both teams joined Finland in advancing from that group.
In Jesenice, Serbia beat Latvia 80-71 behind 25 points from center Nenad Krstic to advance.
Ukraine stayed with France until Parker took over in the fourth quarter. The Spurs guard connected on two jumpers and then sank a 3-pointer to help the French pull away. Parker scored 13 of his team's last 17 points. France was runner-up two years ago.
"We kept fighting and in the fourth quarter we found the solutions," Parker said after playing his 50th game in a European championship. "I try to lead the team and to help the young players. When you are playing must-win games, you have to be disciplined, serious. We'll raise our level in the second round."
In Celje, Ricky Rubio of the Timberwolves and Marc Gasol of the Memphis Grizzlies scored 15 points apiece to lead defending champion Spain to an 89-53 victory over winless Poland.
Five players scored in double figures for Spain, which led 49-13 at halftime and by as many as 48 points before slowing down in the second half.
Krstic said Serbia dedicated its victory to 18-year-old Serbian women's basketball player Natasa Kovacevic, who had a leg amputated after a bus carrying her Hungarian team crashed Saturday.
"We are all affected by this tragedy and she was in our thoughts tonight," Krstic said.
In other games, Bosnia-Herzegovina beat Macedonia 62-54 in Jesenice and Britain eliminated Germany with an 81-73 victory in Ljubljana.

The Most Deserving Remaining Hall Candidates , sumber : hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2013/09/08/the-most-deserving-remaining-hall-candidates/?ls=iref:nbahpts

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The 12 members of the Class of 2013 will begin arriving at the Hall of Fame enshrinement ceremony in a few hours, with the ideal backdrop of a forecast of sunshine and temperatures in the mid-70s for the red-carpet walk up the stairs outside Symphony Hall in the rare afternoon start.
This could turn out to be a very memorable affair. It does not have great NBA star power, but Gary Payton and the equally gregarious Oscar Schmidt are going to have a microphone, so probably best to buckle up, and the crowd will embrace the inductions of Jerry Tarkanian and Guy V. Lewis in a time of serious health issues. There could be a lot of emotion in the room.
The election results announced in April and the enshrinement today means a significant change to the list of the most deserving to make the Hall – Payton and Bernard King were 1-2 in the top-10 list in the winter, following the release of the nominees for 2013, and Tarkanian was 6. The late-summer update is particularly fluid, months before the 2014 candidates are announced, and with the usual important disclaimers: This is among people on the ballot and with NBA or ABA ties, not a statement that they definitely belong in Springfield.
1. Jerry Krause, Contributor committee.
2. Tim Hardaway, North American.
3. Mitch Richmond, North American.
4. Spencer Haywood, North American.
5. Bob (Slick) Leonard, ABA.
6. George McGinnis, ABA.
7. Maurice Cheeks, North American.
8. Vlade Divac, International.
9. Paul Westphal, North American. (As a player.)
10. Nick Galis, International. A slight semantics stretch for someone who spent his entire career in Europe to make the list, but Galis was born and raised in New Jersey, played at Seton Hall, and was drafted by and in camp with the Celtics.
The ranking is of most deserving, not the best chance for election. An ABA representative – Leonard, McGinnis, anyone – will be elected through a special voting channel no matter what, probably ahead of some, and maybe several, candidates from the North American category that handles most of the players with NBA backgrounds. Similarly, one 2014 inductee will almost certainly come from the International and Veterans field, though it is not mandatory that voters elect someone.
In a related development, Sarunas Marciulionis said he would be willing to be re-classified from the International committee, his current category, to the Contributor, an unusual move for a candidate but one that could increase his chances. The former favorite with the Warriors, SuperSonics, Kings and Nuggets is a credible candidate via International, but his risky move to break from the Soviet Union to join the NBA and his work behind the scenes to get newly independent Lithuania to the 1992 Olympics are seminal moments in the development of basketball around the world. Until someone officially requests the move to Contributor, though, he remains in International.
One other thing as the ceremony approaches: Schmidt, a star in his native Brazil and also Italy, is at the Hall about 4 and 1/2 months after undergoing brain surgery to remove a tumor, following a similar procedure about two years ago. He said he is in good health – “I’m cured, man” – but also does chemotherapy.
“And now, I am spending everything I gained,” he said. “All the money I get. And I get a lot of money. Lots of money, I get.”
Schmidt, 55, said he works about eight months of the year as a motivational speaker in Brazil and spends the other four vacationing around the world. While on one of the holidays, while driving in Orlando, Fla., he got word of the Hall election.
“A guy from FIBA called me and said, ‘Hey, you are in the Hall of Fame,’ ” Schmidt recalled. “I said, ‘I know. I did that two years ago (with the induction in the FIBA Hall). You don’t remember?’ ‘No, you are in the Springfield Hall of Fame.’ I stopped the car immediately. ‘Can you repeat.’ ‘You are in the Hall of Fame in Springfield.’ Wow. Legs shaking. This is the best moment of my career.”

He had to "learn the trade from the bottom" at Boston University, Pitino said. There were those "training meals," he said, and the time when champagne was served at Midnight Madness.
"Nine drunks showed up," he said, "and no one else."
He spent five years with the Terriers, then two as an assistant with the New York Knicks before spending the next two as head coach at Providence, leading the Friars to a surprising berth in the Final Four. He kept moving - two years as head coach with the Knicks, eight with Kentucky, four with the Boston Celtics and the past 12 with Louisville.
Just five months ago, he led the Cardinals to the championship.
"At BU, you learn how to build the right way. At Providence, I learned how to dream. I always thought anything is possible after coaching that team," Pitino said during his 20-minute speech, the last of the day. "At Kentucky, I learned all about pressure every single day. It was unbelievable pressure and it was very difficult and that pressure brought out the best in everybody."
Two former college coaches were inducted as part of the second straight 12-member class, the largest in the Hall's history - Jerry Tarkanian, 83, who led UNLV to the 1990 NCAA championship, and Guy Lewis, 91, who took Houston to five Final Fours. Tarkanian, who had heart surgery less than two months ago, came on stage with a walker. Lewis was in a wheelchair. Both smiled as they received standing ovations.
Also inducted Sunday into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame were Gary Payton, the only NBA player with 20,000 points, 8,000 assists, 5,000 rebounds and 2,000 steals; Bernard King, who averaged 22.5 points in 15 NBA seasons with five teams; North Carolina women's coach Sylvia Hatchell; five-time WNBA All-Star Dawn Staley; former Knicks guard Richie Guerin; former NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik; and Oscar Schmidt, who played in five Olympics for Brazil.
E.B. Henderson, who learned basketball at Harvard in 1904 then introduced it to African-American students in Washington, D.C., and four-time ABA All-Star Roger Brown of the Indiana Pacers were enshrined posthumously.
Henderson "laid the foundation" for the progress of African-Americans "from exclusion to domination" of basketball, Nikki Graves Henderson, wife of Henderson's grandson, said in a recorded message.
Payton was known for his defensive prowess, aggressiveness and trash-talking.
"I played hard because I wanted to win every time," he said of his 17-year career, nearly 13 of them with the Seattle SuperSonics. "It was all for my crazy love for the game."
For King, playing basketball as a kid involved sometimes clearing snow from a playground court in Brooklyn.
"I fell in love with basketball the first time I made a basket," he said.
Ten days before his 61st birthday, Pitino stood on stage with Hubie Brown, head coach of the Knicks when he was an assistant, and Dick Vitale, the pair he chose to present him for induction.
Pitino never came close in the pros to the success he had in college. He had losing records in five of his six NBA seasons.
After a loss to Toronto on March 1, 2000, an agitated Pitino urged people to focus on the future, saying, "Larry Bird is not walking through that door, fans. Kevin McHale is not walking through that door, and Robert Parish is not walking through that door. And if you expect them to walk through that door, they're going to be gray and old."
On Sunday, while Pitino posed for photos before the ceremony, a blonde-haired Bird showed up.
"He finally walks through the door, and I said, `What took you so long to walk through that door?' And he said to me, `You don't want me now,"' Pitino said, grinning.
Bird had his turn on stage as the presenter of Schmidt, a prolific scorer who said he chose not to play in the NBA because that would have barred him from playing for his national team.
"It's too easy to have Michael Jordan, Kobe Bryant as an idol, a guy (who) flies around and does whatever he wants. It's easy," Schmidt said. "My guy doesn't run, doesn't jump and played the best of everybody else."
Bird was enshrined in 1998.
On Sunday, he was joined by 12 others.
"There is nothing better than this," Schmidt said.
