CARACAS (FIBA Americas Championship/FIBA Basketball World Cup) - The Dominican Republic on Friday handed Puerto Rico their first defeat at the FIBA Americas Championship as they seriously outplayed them in a 99-84 win on Day 2 of the Second Round.

Carlos Arroyo had 22 points for the losing team and John Holland added 16. The defeat saw the Puerto Ricans drop to 4-1.
Meanwhile, Jamaica's men's basketball team has surprised as much in Caracas as their bobsled team does at the Winter Olympics.
After making Puerto Rico work for their win and eliminating powerhouse Brazil, they proceeded to shock Argentina in an 81-75 win to start off the day's play.
The Jamaicans, relying on solid defense and an offense that made the most of their excellent athleticism, got 24 points from Weyinmi Rose and a dozen from point guard Akeem Scott.
Luis Scola led Argentina with 22 points, but missed key free-throws at the end. Facundo Campazzo added 12.
Jamaica improved to 1-4 with the win, while Argentina dropped to 2-3.
There was no surprise as Mexico continued to play well and got the better of Uruguay, 87-73.
Gustavo Ayon did his usual damage in the paint, finishing with a team-high 17 points for the winners with 17 points, while Hector Hernandez added a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
Uruguay, a team with a very short rotation of players, were once again led by Esteban Batista who had game-highs of 25 points and 19 rebounds.
Mexico improved to 3-2 and Uruguay dropped to 1-4 with the result.
In the last game of the day, tournament hosts Venezuela played outstanding defense on a disoriented Canada team for a 64-59 win that sees them stay perfect in the Second Round with two wins in two games.
Nestor Colmenares came off Venezuela's bench to pace them with 13 points and David Cubillan had 12.
Cory Joseph had 14 points and Tristan Thompson went for 12 points and 20 rebounds for Canada.
On
Saturday, Mexico take on Jamaicas, followed by Argentina going up
against Uruguay. The Dominican Republic face Canada before Puerto Rico
square off against hosts Venezuela.
The top four teams in the Second Round will advance to the Semi-Finals and also qualify for the 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup.
