Coach to Inter Channel after friendly against Lugano: "It just shows
that if you're not in tip-top shape you can find it hard against any
opponents"
APPIANO GENTILE – Like in
pre-season, Walter Mazzarri used today's friendly against Lugano to get
some useful minutes into the legs of players who haven't played much in
Inter's opening fixtures. After the game the coach chatted to Inter
Channel about fitness levels and the progress being shown by Diego
Milito in particular.
"The good thing is that Diego showed even further improvement; he
looked fit. It will take a bit of time for him to reach his peak, of
course, but he's getting there. Am I satisfied with today's friendly?
The purpose of it was to give some match time to the lads who have been
playing less at the end of a week spent working with Giuseppe Pondrelli,
so that we could look at how they're faring fitness-wise. You could see
they're still a bit ring-rusty but then we expected that. It makes you
think about the modern game: it just shows that unless you're in tip-top
shape physically, you can find it hard against any opponents. Credit to
Lugano too, they're a decent side with some useful players."
What about the fact that Inter conceded two goals after keeping
clean sheets in both Serie A fixtures played so far? "As I said, what
mattered most to me was that the lads were given a long runout and those
who have been playing less were put through an excellent workout after
the training schedule we've had them on this week."
Mazzarri was also asked how he feels about the fact that he's won
the fans over already, after the Inter Club members at today's game were
heard chanting his name vociferously. "It's very nice. As I said at the
start, having been on opposite sides for so long I didn't expect to
receive this much this soon. I thank them and I'll do everything I can –
as I've done throughout my career – to repay them for all their
support."
